This 60 page guide will help you understand and appreciate Pennsylvania German and German-American gravestones. Besides providing definitions of 46 symbols used to decorate gravestones from the 1740s to the 1890s, it also includes tips for reading the stones, a glossary of 147 German words commonly found on gravestones (including spelling variations) and reference tables. German words used in this guide are shown in two different German Fraktur scripts to help in deciphering German script stones. Included are black and white photos of German gravestones from Pennsylvania (21) and Texas (6).
